SPSU Writing Center

The purpose of SPSU’s Writing Center is to provide centralized, coordinated writing services on campus and online, specifically targeted to the needs of its polytechnic student population. It is also to provide institutional support for integrating writing across various academic disciplines and university functions. The SPSU Writing Center aims to work with faculty across a number of disciplines on the role and place of writing within their own majors and professions.

Writing Center services are available free of charge for SPSU faculty and currently enrolled SPSU and GHC students.

Instructors referring students may use the Writing Center Referral Form to provide specific direction to students and consultants as well as to document the outcomes of the consultation.

Guidelines for Consultation: What to Expect

Consultation in the Writing Center is not a proofreading service but a collaborative effort to improve student writing. Writing consultants work with students to help them do the following:

  • Understand their assignments.
  • Develop a process for completing their assignments.
  • Improve their communication skills.

Students requesting feedback on drafts must bring in a printed copy in most instances (there is a printing station in the Student Center). Consultants may, at their discretion, make reasonable exceptions regarding printing based on the following criteria:

  • Level of feedback the student is seeking.
  • Learning needs of the student.
  • Genre of the assignment.
  • Length of the assignment.

Click here for more information on printing on campus.

Students are also encouraged to provide instructor guidelines for assignments as well as any other relevant documents including but not limited to rubrics, examples, and related readings. Consultants may require students to provide such documentation.

Professionalism in the Writing Center

Writing consultants are highly qualified university staff and faculty members who work with students to help them improve their communication skills. Students are expected to actively participate in the session and treat consultants with the same degree of respect as they would an instructor in the classroom.

Consultants will only offer guidance on assignments written by students who are present for the session.

Appointments and Walk-Ins

Students seeking services may reserve a 25-minuteconsultation. In an effort to serve as many students as possible, students will be limited to one appointment per day, beginning Fall 2013. A 5-minute grace period will be granted, after which point walk-in students may be served.

Consultants will ask walk-in students to record their session by using the Writing Center Sign-In Sheet. Writing consultants may ask walk-ins to use the online system to make an appointment if they determine the student needs a full 25-minute consultation.

Students are encouraged to schedule appointments at least 24 hours prior to assignment deadlines.
