Outlook
As the upcoming season approaches for the Lady Hornets Basketball program, I'm excited but at the same time reserved about
my expectations for the year ahead. While recruiting went well, the Lady Hornets enter the season with a veteran team consisting
of five returning starters and will be joined by a transfer forward, Jasmine Smith, from Tennessee State University.
“I'm prepared for the season ahead and my staff is ready to work so we'll just see where the year takes us. I feel so blessed
and look forward to the season ahead,” said Dawkins.
Dawkins' first game as head coach at Southern Poly will be November 5, on the road at Brewton Parker Classic versus Voorhees
College.
Jasmine is a transfer forward from Tennessee State University. The Lawrenceville, Georgia native was ranked 30th in the nation
by Blue Star Basketball Rankings at Stephenson High School and selected to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer team as
a sophomore at TSU.
The Lady Hornets will return five starters and four reserves from a team that finished 30-5 overall, earned its first ever
conference tournament championship, and advanced to the second round of the 2010 NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National
Championship in its first-ever tournament appearance.
“I'm blessed and excited to coach women's basketball at Southern Poly. Being a coach and mentor to these young women is my
passion. I'm able to share my passion for the game to the younger generation. I think its important to get this generation
excited about playing women's basketball, always controlling your effort and working hard to achieve the goals that they've
established for themselves.”
“As coaches, we teach these young women about the game of basketball, but we mentor and make sure that they receive their
education and have a wonderful college experience,” said Dawkins. “I look forward to winning on the hard-court, but more importantly
basketball prepares them for life.”
