James (Jim) Herbert
Interim Chief Information Officer (CIO)
Jim Herbert was appointed Interim Chief Information Officer (CIO) for Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) in June 2014. He has been a member of the SPSU Information Technology division since 1996. As director of information technology, he led the data center, telecommunications and information security teams while serving as chief architect of the university's technology infrastructure. He was instrumental in deploying the first voiceover-IP (VoIP) telephone system in the University System of Georgia, and he significantly reduced operating costs and improved service to the university community when he led a pilot project to transition SPSU’s student information system away from high-cost proprietary hardware and operating systems to commodity hardware running Linux. He is also responsible for the design of several enterprise and academic data centers, the latter of which provides SPSU students real-world hands-on experience, making them more marketable as they seek careers in Information Technology.

Jenny assists the Chief Information Officer, Group Directors, and staff of University Information Technology Services with all aspects of administrative support. Jenny also works to keep an effective flow of communications open between the University Information Technology Services staff and the university community. Jenny's previous work experience includes teaching and serving as a paraprofessional within the Cobb County School System and working in various Information Technology roles involving sales, service and support. Jenny is a graduate of Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama and holds a BA degree in Psychology. Her hobbies include spending time with her two teenage sons, playing the piano and enjoying outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, golf, and tennis.
