The Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) regulates and protects the privacy of student educational records.  FERPA both guarantees access to records students and their guardians, and prevents disclosure of those records without the express written consent of affected students and their guardians. Teacher candidates may not discuss student information with anyone other than the student's parents or school personnel who have a right to know about a student. Candidates should be careful not to discuss protected information in areas where they might be overheard.
