Admissions Criteria

After 30 hours of course work, students will be able to apply for admission into the teacher education program. Faculty evaluation of success in introductory courses and other relevant material (including completion of a criminal background check) will be used to assess candidates for admission.

Admission into the Southern Polytechnic State University teacher education program requires students to meet the following criteria:

  1. Completion of 30 credit hours of course work
  2. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all course work
  3. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all major (biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics) course work
  4. Successful completion (passing) of all three GACE Basic Skills tests (reading, mathematics, and writing) or exempting scores from SAT or ACT
  5. Successful completion of criminal background check
  6. Successful completion of the knowledge, skills, and disposition evaluation
  7. Proof of membership in state or national professional education association for liability purposes (e.g., student membership in Georgia Association of Educators, PAGE, or private homeowner’s insurance)
  8. Grade of C or better in EDUC 1101 and 1102 (or 1103), and EDUC 2010, and recommendation from the professor of each EDUC course

Admission into EDUC 4401/4406 Apprentice Teaching requires students to meet the following criteria:

  1. Admissions into Southern Polytechnic State University teacher education program
  2. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all course work
  3. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all major (biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics) course work
  4. Successful completion of all lower level EDUC classes
  5. For Math majors only, successful completion of MAED 2010
  6. Master Teacher’s recommendation
  7. Successful completion of both GACE Tests in the discipline (biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics)
  8. Maintenance of ethical disposition
