Admissions Criteria

After 30 hours of course work, students will be able to apply for admission into the teacher education program. Faculty evaluation of success in introductory courses and other relevant material (including completion of a criminal background check) will be used to assess candidates for admission.

Candidates may not be admitted into a program until the program has been approved by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

Admission into the Southern Polytechnic State University teacher education program requires students to meet the following criteria:

  1. Completion of 30 credit hours of course work
  2. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all course work
  3. Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on all major (biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics) course work
  4. Successful completion (passing) of all three GACE Basic Skills tests (reading, mathematics, and writing) or exempting scores from SAT or ACT (GA PSC Program Admission Testing Requirements)
  5. Successful completion of criminal background check
  6. Successful completion of the knowledge, skills, and disposition evaluation
  7. Proof of membership in state or national professional education association for liability purposes (e.g., student membership in Georgia Association of Educators, PAGE, or private homeowner’s insurance)
  8. Grade of C or better in EDUC 1101 and 1102 (or 1103), and EDUC 2010, and recommendation from the instructor of each EDUC course

Students who are admitted into the teacher education program are referred to as teacher candidates, or candidates, and may register for courses for which candidacy is a prerequisite. A student who fails to satisfy all the admissions criteria may be admitted provisionally upon the approval of the program co-directors. A provisional candidate may continue to take classes in the program, but must satisfy all admissions criteria within one semester, or be ejected from the program.

A candidate whose GPA drops below 2.5 in any of the specified areas of course work for two consecutive semesters will be ejected from the program, but may reapply for admission if the GPA is restored to 2.5 or higher.
