Southern Poly Wins Fourth Straight Home Match
Amidst a storm that would eventually bring large amounts of rain and lightning and ended the game after 80 minutes of play, the #7 nationally ranked Southern Poly Hornets beat the Royals of Warner University 2-1. Goals came from Junior Emeka Maduka and Senior Jumol Harewood both in the first half and proved to be enough to secure the victory, the fourth in four games this season.
Maduka opened the scoring in the 25th minute when Senior midfielder Sean Grisham streaked down the left flank past two Royal defenders crossing a ball Maduka headed past the goalie. It was Maduka’s team leading fifth goal of the season. Shortly after Senior Diego Nicholson picked up a loose ball in mid field and dribbled past four defenders to slip Grisham behind the back line. Grisham picked out Harewood in the penalty box who neatly one timed it into the net to double the lead. That goal was Harewood’s fourth and was Grisham’s second assist for the game as well as the season.
The Royal’s scored the first goal against Southern Poly on the season with about 10 minutes left in the first half. A free kick from 22 yards was deflected off a Southern Poly defender and rolled past Junior Goalkeeper Jason Andrew. “It was an unfortunate way to get scored on. A mistake leads to a bad foul which leads to us conceding for the first time on the season. Allowing three shots on goal the entire game was proof of a good performance by our back line but a clean sheet is always preferable” said Head Coach Kom Momeni.
After 70 minutes, the game was delayed because of lightning and after the 30 minute delay and 8 minutes of more game play the game was suspended again and eventually officially ended. The win improved the Hornets to 4-0 on the season.
Southern Poly travels to SSAC opponent Faulkner University Wednesday September 7th. Kickoff is at 4pm.
