Southern Poly Shuts Out Union University for Second Win
August 27, 2011
Southern Poly Blanks Union for Another Clean Sheet In their second match of the young season, Southern Poly was able to shut out the Bulldogs of Union University to increase their record to 2-0-0 and notch their second clean sheet in as many games. The lone goal came in the 18th minute of the first half as Senior MF Sean Grisham (Marietta, GA) picked up a loose ball and beat the Union keeper to the near post. It was the first goal and game winning goal for Grisham on the year.

Southern Poly controlled the pace of the game for the entire 90 minutes. Allowing only one shot on goal, they were able to get eight on goal of their own. They also held an eight to three advantage on corner kicks. Senior FWD Jumol Harewood (Port of Spain, Trinidad) led the team in shots with six, four of which were on frame. Junior GK Jason Andrew (Rosseau, Dominica) was called upon very rarely but when he was he came through. “Defensively we did a good job of slowing down and limiting Union’s chances. They are a very good team individually, especially going forward, and our backs did well to prevent any opportunities” said Head Coach Kom Momeni.
Southern Poly had several chances to put the game away in the second half but missed on a few golden opportunities. Harewood and Grisham each had chances inside the penalty area late in the game and both were unable to finish. “Getting a second or third goal would’ve been great. We put a lot of pressure on our back line because we didn’t finish our chances early. Sean had a great goal for us and played a great match but a second goal would’ve done wonders” added Momeni.
Southern Poly hosts SSAC conference opponent Emmanuel College Tuesday August 30th at 5pmat Nue Soft Technologies Field.
