In a SSAC match that featured the visiting number two nationally ranked Rams from the University of Mobile and the number seven nationally ranked Hornets from Southern Polytechnic State University, a goal in the 25th minute would prove to be enough to secure the victory for Mobile. They would add two goals in the second half to secure the victory, their seventh in seven tries.

Southern Poly came out strong and limited the Rams chances in the first half. The Rams only had one good look at goal on a set piece from 25 yards out. Their goal came from a floated ball high to the back post where a Ram attacked it and sent it far post for the goal. Southern Poly would increase the pressure and have a few opportunities of its own, one being with four minutes left in the first half. Senior Sean Grisham beat a defender on the outside and crossed a ball to Senior Jumol Harewood who headed it from six yards out off the crossbar. The rebound fell loose in the box and after a scramble it was cleared away.

The second half saw Mobile come out and exploit another SPSU mistake as a streaking center mid for the Rams picked up a pass from 12 yards out and beat Freshman goalie Vincent Easterbrook for their second goal. This goal came three minutes into the second half. Southern Poly would keep at it as they would create four great scoring chances over the next 30 minutes. On two different occasions, Hornet midfielders Sean Grisham and Juan Henao missed free headers from about 12 yards out. Next, Senior Rani Alkoptan would find himself alone with the Rams Gk from six yards out and miss touched it, while Junior Emeka Maduka beat three defenders from 20 yards out and shot a low hard driven ball that the Ram goalie made a great save on. Then shortly after that Harewood would again threaten as he picked up a loose ball, beat the goalie and shoot a ball to the far post only for a Ram defender to poke it away for a corner. Finally, a cross from Grisham found three open Hornets (Maduka, Harewood, and Nicholson) completely uncovered on the far post and yet none of them found the back of the net.

“The frustration level is very high. We are doing everything to create great looks on goal. I’m not even talking half-chances. These are shots from six to twelve yards out. Yet, we can’t find the back of the net. I guess that is what separates great teams from good teams. Mobile looks great now and we are just average,” said a disappointed Kom Momeni, SPSU’s Head Coach. The 7th ranked Hornets have hit a slump where they have only scored one goal in three matches.

The Rams’ final goal was finished brilliantly in the far upper corner by Deshorn Brown. The game would end 3-0 and would be the second loss of the season for the Hornets on the year.

The Hornets are back at it on Tuesday October 4th as they travel to Montgomery, Alabama to face Auburn University of Montgomery. The Hornets are 7-2 on the year while nationally ranked number 25 AUM is 4-3-1 on the year.

The Hornets next home match is Tuesday October 11th as they host SSAC opponent Truett-McConnell College at 3pm.
