Hornets 1- Cumberlands (KY) 1

Saturday September 14, 2009

Marietta, GA

Southern Poly and University of the Cumberlands battled to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of play.  The equalizing goal came on the lone shot on-goal from Cumberlands with :02 seconds left in regulation.  That shot was a penalty kick converted by Midfielder, Victor Navarro.  "If you would have told me that we would hold a very good Cumberlands team to no shots on goal in the regular run of play for 110 minutes, I would have said that we would probably come away with a win.  I guess fate had other plans," said a very disappointed SPSU Coach, Kom Momeni.  The penalty kick was called when a trip occurred right on the edge of the 18 yard box.

The first goal of the match came from Hornet All-American, Emeka Maduka, who picked up a loose ball 22 yards out and fired a low driven shot in the back of the net, with 15 minutes left in the first half.

The match saw a very focused and disciplined SPSU side.  They had seven shots on goal and a number of good chances that barely missed the goal.  "It was one of our best overall performances of the young season.  We were very solid defensively and countered with pace much of the day.  We just need to finish our chances and get out of the habit of these 1-0 leads," said Momeni.

A couple of the best chances came on corners kicks, when Midfielder, Marcos Mendez headed two free headers that barely missed the goal, and Midfielder, Rani Alkoptan blasted a header in the first overtime, that missed wide left.  Forward, Emeka Maduka also saw another close range shots that was kicked saved by the Cumberlands GK.

As time was running down in the second overtime, a Cumberlands long throw saw the entire Patriot team in the Hornets penalty area.  A header fired off the post, and landed straight down on the line, and the horn blew to end the game.  Much of the Patriot bench rushed the Asst. Referee to protest the "no goal" call, but the call stood and both teams went home with a draw.

The Hornets next match is against Bryan College on Wednesday September 8th at 5pm.
