Hornets 1- TN Wesleyan 0
August 31, 2010
It took nearly 105 minutes for Southern Poly to get the game winning goal to send them to their second victory in the young season over visiting Tennessee Wesleyan College. Junior Rani Alkoptan headed a pass from Junior Kouami d’Almeida with close to five minutes remaining in the second overtime. It’s Alkoptan’s first goal of the season and d’Almeida’s first assist.
The game featured a Southern Poly team who dominated much of the second half and overtime periods, outshooting TWC 12-3 and having 13 corners in the match. Southern Poly had many great opportunities to score with d’Almeida walking in on two breakaways and being stopped by the TWC keeper. Sophomore Emeka Maduka had three shots on goal in the match, all from close range, that were set aside by the keeper and Junior Diego Nicholson ended the game with five shots, one of which hit the post and the other at point blank shot into the keeper’s chest, both in the second half.
The best chance of the match for the visiting Bulldogs came when SPSU Senior Stephen Herget misplayed a flighted ball and Garrett Koon picked the ball up in front of the Hornet back line. He beat three defenders and the GK, yet hit the post. The rebound was collected by Hornet GK, Eric Ati.
In the final OT period, Junior Chris Szalwinski found d’Almeida at the back post who headed it across to Alkoptan who headed it into the back of the net to end the game. The win gives Southern Poly a 2-0-1 record on the year and a 21 game regular season unbeaten streak dating back to Oct. 8th 2008.
Southern Poly next hosts University of the Cumberlands on Saturday September 4th at 4pm at Nuesoft Technologies Field.
