Southern Poly Holds Off Shorter in Final Game of Regular Season
It took Shorter University less than ten minutes to get on the scoreboard, but Southern Poly came back to tie just three minutes later, and then eventually win on a goal in the 86th minute. The game winner for the Hornets came off the head of Senior, Daniel Oyugah, the first in his career. The win moves Southern Poly to 10-3-2 on the year and 6-0 in SSAC Conference play. This is the second consecutive season Southern Poly finished undefeated in conference play and it’s their second regular season title in as many years.
SPSU Sophomore, Emeka Maduka got his ninth of the season when Freshman, Gabe Warner slipped a pass through to Junior, Sean Grisham who beat a defender along the end line and slipped it across to Maduka who tapped it into the empty net. It was Maduka’s ninth of the year and Grisham’s fourth assist. That goal tied the game at one and the score didn’t change until the 86th minute.
With only four minutes on the clock, Senior, Daniel Oyugah picked up a cross from Senior, Christian Castillo and nodded it into the far corner for the game winner. The goal was the first of Oyugah’s career and the goal that clinched the second consecutive season that Southern Poly went undefeated in SSAC Regular Season play. The assist was the ninth of the season for Castillo.
“Our guys were shocked by the speed of the turf and intensity of the opponent in the opening minutes. It took us a while to get used to the pace of the game. Once we did, I thought we played very well,” said SPSU Head Coach Kom Momeni.
Southern Poly hosts the First Round of the SSAC Tournament on Saturday November 6th against Spring Hill. Spring Hill is the #4 seed on the West side of the conference. The game kicks off at 3pm at Nuesoft Technologies field.
