Southern Poly Returns to Winning Ways

It took just over eight minutes for Southern Poly to score over the visiting Eagles from Reinhardt University, and to start their way to their third victory of the season, breaking a three game winless streak in which they lost twice.  Junior, Rani Alkoptan notched his third goal of the season, his second game winner, on an assist from Junior, Diego Nicholson.

Southern Poly dominated the match from the whistle creating many scoring chances in each half.  With only eight minutes gone, Nicholson picked up a loose ball about 40 yards from goal and streaked past four Eagle defenders in the box and slipped a ball to Alkoptan who calmly received it and shot it by the diving Eagle Goalkeeper.   Southern Poly kept the pressure up immediately after when Junior, Kouami d’Almeida dribbled past two defenders and hit the crossbar from 20 yards away.

The second half saw much of the same as Southern Poly came out applying much pressure to the backline and goal of Reinhardt.  Alkoptan headed a corner from Sophomore, Trevor Whelan beyond the keeper early on in the half only to have it cleared off the line by an Eagle defender.  Southern Poly created a few more chances to go ahead by more than one but couldn’t capitalize.  With about 13 minutes left, Senior keeper Eric Ati pulled off an amazing save when an Eagle player struck a ball from about 25 yards, on a free kick.  The ball was headed into the upper corner and Ati flew across the goal and parried it away for corner kick.  This is the fourth shutout on the season for Ati in seven matches, bringing his Goals Against Average to 0.86 on the season.

“That’s a world class save made by a senior GK (Ati) who knows what it takes to win at this level” said Head Coach Kom Momeni.  When asked about the game, Momeni said “it was a hard fought battle that we should’ve finished early. However, having struggled the past few games we are happy to get a result.”

"I was happy with the way we defended, only allowing them one shot on goal all game.  I just wished that we could have finished our chances in the first half to take away some of the pressure we felt the last 15 minutes of the match," added Momeni.

Southern Poly faces SSAC West rival AUM on Saturday October 2nd at 3pm at AUM.  Southern Poly’s next home match is against SSAC Conference rival Lee University on Saturday October 16th at 3pm.
