Hornets 2- U of Mobile 3 (2OT)
September 17, 2010
Playing in their fourth overtime match of the 2010 season, The Southern Poly Hornets fall to the Rams from University of Mobile 3-2. After a long hard fought 108 minutes by both sides, the University of Mobile got the game winner with less than two minutes left in the second OT and handed Southern Poly their second loss in as many games.
Southern Poly (2-2-2) opened the scoring when Junior, Sean Grisham took a pass from Junior, Kouami d’Almeida, 12 yards out, and slotted it in the far corner past the diving Mobile Goalkeeper. Mobile answered 44 seconds later and scored twice in a one minute and 17 second span.
With the second half seeing much of the pressure applied by the Hornets, Senior Stephen Herget found Junior, Rani Alkoptan with a 20 yard through ball, where Alkoptan calmly received it on top of the penalty box and pushed it to the far corner. Alkoptan's second goal on the year would tie the game with just over seven minutes to play.
The OT saw a back and forth battle with both team threatening each others’ goal. With just over two minutes remaining, a Mobile forward picked up a loose ball about 25 yards from the Hornet's goal and dribbled into the box. He slipped it under Senior, Goalkeeper, Eric Ati who got a big piece of the ball. The shot, however, had just enough on it to cross the goal line.
"Mobile has tons of pace and we just could not match their athleticism. They are a very talented side and deserved the hard fought win. I am proud of our guys for fighting so hard and coming back to send the game into overtime," said SPSU Head Coach, Kom Momeni.
Southern Poly hosts Young Harris College (NCAA II) this Wednesday September 22nd at home on Nuesoft Technologies Field.
