Hornets Start Conference Play with 3-0 Victory over Emmanuel
The Southern Poly Men's Soccer team traveled to Franklin Springs, GA to start their 2010 Southern States Athletic Conference schedule. They earned a 3-0 win against the Emmanuel College Lions (6-6-0). The win give the Hornets a 4-3-2 record and 1-0 in the conference.
The game started with a few defensive mistakes by the Hornets that gave the Lions two good looks on goal. None of the looks resulted in shots on goal, but they did produce two corner kicks.
In the 15th minute, SPSU Junior, Midfielder, Sean Grisham scored an unassisted goal as he picked a loose ball and dribbled across the 18 and blasted a shot that deflected off a Lion defender. This would result as the game winner and the only goal in the half.
The second half saw a totally dominating performance by the Hornets, who did not allow a single shot on goal all half, and scored two goals of their own. They also had a goal called back and hit the post twice. Most impressively, they killed nine minutes by possessing the ball in the corners, and not even trying to goal to goal. "I was very impressed by our play in the second half," said Head Coach Kom Momeni. "It was our best half of play since the first half of the Cumberlands match."
The second goal, for the Hornets, came from Grisham's second of the day and fifth on the season. A handling call resulted in a penalty kick that was coolly converted by the junior midfielder. The final goal came from a sequence of eight straight passes that began in the Hornet's defensive third and ended with a Diego Nicholson goal, assisted by Emeka Maduka with 41 second left on the clock.
Defensively, it was the Hornet's fifth shutout on the year, bringing Senior, Goalkeeper, Eric Ati's Goal Against Average to .778. He ended the day with two saves.
Southern Poly travels to Cleveland, GA to play newly instated conference opponent Truett-McConnell on Tuesday October 12 at 2pm.
