Southern Poly Clinches SSAC Playoff Berth with 6 Goal Win on Senior Day
It was Senior Day 2010 and the Southern Poly Soccer team showed their gratitude to their seniors by posting a 6-0 win against SSAC Conference rival Brewton-Parker College. The scoring was opened by Junior, Kouami d’Almeida in the first half and then Southern Poly exploded for five in the second half, putting the game out of reach early.
All six seniors were honored before the game and were given plaques from Head Coach Kom Momeni as their career stats and recognitions were read aloud to the crowd. Seniors Eric Ati, Ryan Black, Christian Castillo, Abdi Hassan, Stephen Herget, and Daniel Oyugah have each been integral part of the program’s development whether one or four years that they played. Eric Ati is the first player to come directly from High School and play all four years.
The game started off slow but Southern Poly was dominant from the beginning. d'Almeida received a ball from Senior Daniel Oyugah 12 minutes into the first half, beat two defenders on top of the 18, and curled a ball into the far lower corner for a great first goal of the game. The goal makes it d’Almeida’s eighth of the year. That was the score at halftime, even though Southern Poly threatened several more times and didn’t surrender a shot on goal.
The second half saw more of the same for Southern Poly, except they exploded for five
goals in the second half. Junior, Sean Grisham volleyed a ball from Freshman, Gabe
Warner two minutes into the second half to put the Hornets up by two. Moments later,
Sophomore, Emeka Maduka was sprung through the back line on a great ball from Junior
Diego Nicholson. Maduka tried to dribble the goalkeeper from BPC and when the ball
popped loose d’Almeida neatly tucked it away with his first touch for a 3-0 lead.
The fourth goal was scored by Maduka, as a result from a corner kick from Christian Castillo. Maduka rose above the crowd and headed a ball down and into the net. The fifth goal was also scored by Maduka as Grisham found Oyugah who found Maduka 15 yards from goal for the one touch finish. The sixth goal was a display of great technical ability as Oyugah picked the up the ball about 20 yards from goal, quickly beat three different BPC defenders and slipped a short pass through to Sophomore, Roberto De La Hoz. De La Hoz blasted a left footed screamer for his first goal of the season.
It was a great second half display of soccer as Southern Poly, not only scored six on the day, but also prevented a single shot on goal. The win give the Hornets an 8-3-2 record with two regulars season matches left on the schedule.
