Southern Poly Wins SSAC East Regular Season Championship

After winning the SSAC Regular Season Championship in 2009, Southern Poly repeats and takes the SSAC East Regular Season Championship (this season the SSAC spilt into East and West divisions).  They clinched the championship with a 2-1 victory over SSAC East rival Warriors from Southern Wesleyan University.  The game winning goal goes to Junior, Sean Grisham on an assist from Junior, Kouami d’Almeida.

The teams battled to a 0-0 halftime draw with Southern Poly controlling the action and outshooting the Warriors 4-0 and getting two corners of the half.  Southern Poly had two great opportunities when Sophomore, Emeka Maduka picked up a ball from 25 yards out beat two defenders and struck the outside of the post. Grisham almost opened the scoring as well, halfway through the first half, when he bent a 25 yard free kick around the wall and struck the inside of the near post.  Sophomore, Marcos Mendez followed the rebound up and shot a ball that was blocked by a sliding Warrior player.  “We had several very good opportunities with Grisham and Maduka hitting the post early on.  I was happy with our ability to get forward in numbers and create opportunities, but disappointed with our inability to finish,” said SPSU Head Coach Kom Momeni.

It took only ten minutes into the second half for Southern Poly to take the lead.  Maduka picked up a ball from Junior Diego Nicholson and drove by two defenders into the box where he slipped it across for Senior Christian Castillo who neatly tucked it away for his second of the year.  Three minutes later, the Warriors equalized on a mis-clearance by SPSU Senior Goalkeeper, Eric Ati.  Ati came out on a corner kick that was a hard driven, bending ball.  We went to punch it away in a crowd and knocked it in the air about six inches from his glove.  An SWU player simply headed the ball into the empty net.  “Eric has been fantastic on services and crosses all year.  He just lost concentration,” said Momeni.

In the 65th minute Southern Poly took the lead for good as d’Almeida dribbled by three defenders into the Warriors’ box and cut back to give an easy ball to Grisham, who slipped it into the far corner for the lead.  It was Grisham’s team leading tenth goal of the season and second game winner on the year.  From there it was all Southern Poly, as they kept the Warriors to just one shot on goal and one corner kick for the game.

The win clinches the Regular Season Championship for the Hornets and has them host the 1st Round of the SSAC Tournament on Saturday November 6th against Spring Hill College from Mobile, Alabama.  Southern Poly’s next game is this Saturday at 2pm against SSAC East rival Shorter University for the final game of the regular season at Shorter University.
