Southern Poly Visits Local YMCA During National Tournament
As part of the NAIA’s plan to teach the five core values of the NAIA to local youth, the Southern Poly Men’s Soccer team visited the Gulf Shores Recreation Center to teach a group of children about integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. A short presentation on each core value was given by a Southern Poly player, who explained his understanding of the value, and gave examples of how they demonstrated it in their everyday life.
Seniors Eric Ati, Stephen Herget, Ryan Black along with Sophomores Khris Hammock and Alex Phelps each presented a core value and gave examples. After the presentation, Junior Kouami d’Almeida showcased his juggling and tricks skills for the group before they were split up into smaller groups with the players. Each group of four to five players gave hands on coaching to each of the kids and demonstrated proper technique for dribbling, passing, and shooting.
“It was a great time had by all” said SPSU Men’s Soccer Assistant Coach, John Sprague. “Our guys truly enjoy interacting with the youth and these children really enjoyed being around our guys.” From the games played and the reactions by both players and youth alike, it was a great success.
