Southern Poly's Men's Soccer team lost it's first match of the season, 2-1 to Lee University, in the Second Round of the SSAC Men's Soccer Tournament. The match saw the Hornets trial for the first time all season at the 87 minute mark, when Lee scored the game winner.
"I have no other explanation other than divine intervention. How else can you explain missing 7 shots within 12 yards of their goal, in the second half alone, and in turn giving up the softest goals in program history? We outplayed them from whistle to whistle", said a very disappointed Coach Kom Momeni.
SPSU got on the scoreboard at the 29th minute, when Felipe Lopez found SPSU leading goal scorer, Emeka Maduka, who coolly chipped the on coming GK. It was Maduka's 14th goal on the year and Lopez's 10th assist on the season.
From the 19th minute to the 70th minute, Lee University, had no shots or corners. "I think that our defenders feel asleep because they had so little to do for so long", said Momeni of the first Lee goal. A through ball from the Lee University midfield found GK Eric Ati and Defender Abdi Hassan both going after the ball and pulling back at the last second. A simple communication mistake cost the home side dearly as the Lee University forward pounced on the ball in between Ati and Hassan and tapped it in.
The Hornets had plenty of opportunities to put away the game early and often as Felipe Lopez, Diego Nicholson, Henning Blenkle, Kouami d'Almeida, Emeka Maduka, and Sean Grisham all missed close range opportunities. "We got in behind them all day long, but our guys did not have the composure to put the ball in the back. I give their GK tons of credit!" said Momeni.
The game winner came when a Earl Alcide received a ball into space and sent a bending shot into the top corner of the Hornet's goal. The shot was taken at such a sharp angle that GK Eric Ati did not even make a play for it. "I thought that it was a cross into the box, not a shot", said Ati. Whatever it was, it closed out all hopes for SPSU to win the SSAC Tournament, and it was only the third shot for Lee the entire match.
The Hornets out shot Lee University 12-3 on goal and had 12 corner kicks to their 4. Lee University travels to AUM to play in the Conference Tournament final on Saturday Nov.14th at 1pm.
