Hornets Receive votes for the National Top 25 Ranking, A First in School History

September 24, 2008

Hornets go to 4-2-1 with a 2-1 win over Milligan College, and for the first time in it's two year history, are receiving votes for the National Top 25 Ranking.

The SPSU Soccer Team hosted the Milligan College Buffalos at Nuesoft Technologies Field. It would be a rematch of last year's game, when the Buffalos held the Hornets scoreless, for the first time ever. After the first ten minutes, when both teams were getting into the flow of the match, the Hornets created some chances when Senior Midfielder, James Grant fired off two shots in a span of one minute. One resulted in a corner kick, and the other raised the spirits of his teammates. From that point on, SPSU applied constant pressure and created dangerous chances on goal, while possessing the ball throughout midfield.

Mid way through the first half, Sophomore Mamadou "Futty" Danso received the ball from 40 yards out, turned and fired a cracking shot that hit the cross bar. Later he would be denied by a brilliant save from Milligan GK, Bryan Newbold. Moments before halftime, Danso scored his ninth goal of the season with an assist from Diego Nicholson and Felipe Lopez.

"I was very pleased by our play in the first half. We were organized defensively and went forward with confidence", said Coach Momeni

The second half, the Hornets would again create many chances, but would be denied by Newbold who ended the match with nine saves. Buffalo Midfielder, Philip Wilson equalized the match with great 25 yard shot that beat Hornet GK, Eric Ati.

This would set the stage for SPSU Freshman Forward, Kouami d'Alemieda. He would be subbed in with about 20 minutes left in the match. He scored the game winner when he receive the ball into space, from Felipe Lopez and beat his defender and GK and slotted the ball near post. It was his first goal of the year and Lopez's fourth assist.

The Hornets take on Conference foe, Emmanuel College, on Saturday September 27th at 4pm in Franklin Springs, GA.
