Game sixteen of the season, and the Hornets final game in the Conference, would be away to rival Reinhardt College. Southern Poly came into the game with a winning streak of four and would be looking to extend this as a win would both guarantee them third spot in the conference and a home first round match.
A relatively quiet first half saw a 0-0 contest. Freshman Sean Grisham had one of the best chances, when he picked the ball up 25 yards from the Eagles goal, dribbled past one defender, and struck the ball long and hard, only to be denied by a great save, resulting in a corner. SPSU would have one more great look before the half, when a corner was met by junior Felipe Lopez and his powerful header was tipped by the post.
The second half would be a better all round performance. Senior, James Grant and Freshman, Diego Nicholson both became more active on the wings and would prove to be key in the Hornets win. Nicholson looked dangerous on two occasions and was unlucky not to break the deadlock with one shot just creeping past the post. Conference leading goal scorer Mamadou Danso tried to get on the score sheet but none of his six shots could find the net.
With fifteen minutes to go, an off the ball incident, led to the dismissal of an Eagles player that would force them to play a man down. The Hornets would capitalize and with eight minutes to go, Freshman Chris Szalwinski served a great ball to the far post and Danso was there to meet it. He directed it back across the goal, and a delighted Diego Nicholson would get on the end of it to get what would prove to be the game winner.
The Hornets extended their record to 11-4-1 and 7-2 in the Conference. Their next game will be against Thomas University this Sunday, before next Wednesday’s first Conference tournament match in only SPSU’s second season.
