Hornets Beat Emmanuel College 3-0

The Hornets went into their 8th game of the season against Emmanuel College looking to extend their 4-2-1 record.  They would be looking for revenge against the Lions who last year shockingly put them out entering both the Conference and Regional tournament.  SPSU would be without striker Mamadou Danso who is struggling with whip lash from last game.

Both teams were sitting in for the first twenty minutes and no real chances were created.  A couple of substitutions would make all the difference.  The introduction of Emmanuel “Manny” Elomobor, and Iago Vasquez, would help the offense to open up the Lions defense.  On the 33rd minute mark, Senior James Grant would play a great ball to the back post.  Diego Nicholson would head the ball to Sean Grisham, and the freshman would score his second game winning goal in the Conference with a near post header.

The Hornets now looked more composed and Senior Iago Vasquez who has already recorded one assist in his first substitution would be the “super sub” once more.  Elomobor received the ball on top of the Lion’s 18 yard box and showed some good foot work.  Elomobor would pass the ball to Iago who would side foot the ball twenty yards out, and he celebrated before the ball even hit the back to put the Hornets two goals to the good.

The second half saw a different, charger Lions line up.  The first twenty minutes, they were pressing to try and get back into the game.  They would not create any opportunities but would have the Hornets on their back foot.  They would not capitalize on their pressure and the game would be out of reach for the home side, when substitute Bilal “Bo” Anderson would pounce on a bouncing ball in behind the defense and pass the ball by the keeper to give the Hornets the third goal.

The Hornets would extend their Conference record to 3-1 and overall record to 5-2-1.  “It was good for us to come away with all three points and a clean sheet, with GK Ryan Black getting his first Conference start.  It was a good team effort by all”.

Our Hornets will be playing against Conference rivals Berry this Wednesday the 1st of October at 5pm.
