Hornets Beat #13 Lee University
September 13, 2008
An inspired Southern Poly Hornets took the field to take on Conference rivals, Lee University. Lee University came into the game with a 2-1-1 record and more importantly with a #13th national ranking. The Hornets would be looking to bounce back after a dismal last thirty minutes in their previous match against Shorter College.
The game started with the Hornets sitting back and only allowing Lee a couple 20 yards plus shots, but nothing more than half chances. Southern Poly’s Mamadou “Futty” Danso would be looking sharp when he came on and had a few good chances. The game would take a big turn however on the 36th minute when great pressure from the Hornets midfield, allowed Danso to receive the ball and play a superb ball through to freshman Sean Grisham. From here the youngster was nothing but sensational. He drove at the Lee defender and with some good skill beating his man and showed great strength and composure to beat the Haitian GK to put the Hornets a goal to the good.
Minutes after the restart the Hornets nearly made it two! A great ball from Senior James Grant found an open Chris Szalwinski in the 6 yard box and his free header would miss by inches. Danso would also miss a great opportunity to score minutes before half time, but his header in the 6 yard box would hit the side netting from a great ball from Felipe Lopez.
Southern Poly would come out the second half to one of their best performances in their short history, if not the best. After just 8 minutes they would score a “beauty”. Sean Grisham would pick up the ball and attack the Lee defense only to be brought down 30 yards out. A quick free kick from Captain Jeff Paffenback played in James Grant, who would serve the ball in, to find Danso sprinting 20 yards to smack the ball home from 12 yards out to put the Hornets 2-0.
The Hornets would not be finished though. They would defend well and create more great chances. Manny Elomobor would cause problems for the Lee defense and after beating the keeper to the ball, found Sean Grisham free in the box and the freshman midfielder would be unlucky not to score his second. From the resulting corner, Freshman Diego Nicholson would show some great control and find James Grant just outside the box. Grant would take a couple nice touches before effortlessly curved the ball into the top corner to put the game out of reach.
Southern Poly would add a fourth when Elomobor would take the ball into the corner and turn two Lee defenders before slipping the ball to Grisham, who would score the Hornets fourth of the day and his second. “It was a brilliant performance from front to back. We defended very well and took our chances. This was our 21st game in our still new program and for once things just went our way. We could not take our chances mid week against Shorter which resulted in a loss, and we had over 30 shots the previous week and only put away two. Today, we finally took our chances and some individuals had some special games. Grisham was instrumental in the midfield, Grant was brilliant both defending and going forward. Danso was also extremely important as always both going forward and defending. We needed something from the boys after a dismal midweek loss and the boys showed nothing but character and a lot of heart today”, said an ecstatic Coach Momeni.
The Hornets will be hosting Covenant College Scots this upcoming Wednesday at 5pm.
