SOUTHERN POLY MOVES UP TO NO. 13 IN NAIA NATIONAL POLL
MARIETTA, Ga. – After winning its only game last week, a 3-0 victory at Belhaven University
in the opening round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament, the Southern
Polytechnic State University men’s soccer team moved up four places to 13th nationally,
according to the latest NAIA Men's Soccer Coaches' Top 25 Poll that was released on
Tuesday.
Southern Polytechnic, which received 350 points in this week’s poll, began the year
ranked No. 3 and then climbed up to second – its highest rating in the six-year history
of the program. Southern Poly had been between No. 7 and No. 17 the past eight weeks.
Defending national champion Lindsey Wilson College, with a 17-1-0 overall record,
is atop the poll after receiving 590 points and is followed by the University of Rio
Grande (
14-1-1, 573 points), Oklahoma Wesleyan University (18-0-1, 533), the University of Science
and Arts of Oklahoma (13-0-4, 529) and Concordia University Irvine (
16-2-1, 528). Besides the Hornets, other SSAC teams in the rating include the University
of Mobile at seventh (
14-3-1, 493 points), Auburn University at Montgomery at No. 8 (
14-3-2, 462), Southern Wesleyan University at 11th (
14-2-1, 409) and Belhaven at No. 20 (
14-3-1, 328). The entire poll can be viewed at naia.org.
SPSU is
12-4-1 overall after finishing 7-3-1 in the conference, tying for fourth place. Southern
Poly, the No. 5 seed, plays top-seed Mobile in a SSAC Tournament semifinal match on
Thursday. The contest is scheduled for 3 p.m. Central time (4 p.m. Eastern) in Montgomery,
Ala.
