MARIETTA, Ga. – Southern Polytechnic State University men’s soccer player Adis Islamovic was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his play during the week of Sept. 17-23. It marks the first time Islamovic has earned the weekly award and he is also the first Southern Polytechnic player since Nov. 22, 2010 to receive SSAC Player-of-the-Week honors in men’s soccer.
Islamovic, a 6-foot-1, 170-pound freshman midfielder from San Diego, Calif., had a goal and an assist as Southern Poly went 2-0 last week in a pair of SSAC games. In the Hornets’ 2-1 win last Friday over the University of Mobile, which is rated 14th nationally in the NAIA, he scored a goal in the 61st minute to tie the match and then assisted on the game-winner in the 83rd minute.
On the season, Islamovic has started all seven contests for SPSU and is tied for the team lead with four assists. He is second on the squad in scoring (10 points), third in shots (21) and tied for third in goals (three). Within the SSAC, Islamovic ranks tied for sixth in assists per game (0.57) and tied for eighth in total assists. Nationally at the NAIA level, he is tied for 45th in assists per game and tied for 46th in total assists.
Southern Poly, ranked No. 7 nationally in the NAIA, is 6-1 overall this season and 2-0 in conference play. The Hornets are on the road this Friday for a SSAC match against Belhaven University, which is rated fourth in the latest NAIA coaches’ poll. The contest is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Central time (3:30 p.m. Eastern) in Jackson, Miss.
