JACKSON, Miss. – On Friday afternoon in Southern States Athletic Conference play, the Southern Polytechnic State University men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to the host Belhaven University Blazers at H.T. Newell Field. Unbeaten and untied Belhaven is No. 4 nationally and Southern Polytechnic seventh in the latest NAIA rankings.
The only scoring in the match came when the Blazers knocked in a goal in just the fourth minute (3:16). The last shutout loss for Southern Poly came exactly one year ago (3-0 at home to the University of Mobile in a SSAC game on Sept. 28, 2011).
In their first SSAC road contest of the year, the Hornets outshot Belhaven 13-9, but the hosts took five shots on goal, compared to three for SPSU. Southern Poly had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
In goal for the Hornets, senior Dennis Kramer played all 90 minutes and was credited with three saves.
SPSU is 6-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in SSAC play while the Blazers improve to a perfect 10-0-0 overall, including 3-0-0 in the conference. Southern Poly travels to face the William Carey University Crusaders in another SSAC match on Saturday at 7 p.m. Central time (8 p.m. Eastern) in Hattiesburg, Miss.
