In another match where Southern Poly statistically blew out the competition, they needed a late goal from Junior Emeka Maduka to keep them undefeated at 6-0 as they beat Montreat College 2-1. Senior Jumol Harewood opened the scoring before a late Montreat equalizer, with all three goals coming in the second half.

It took nearly 68 minutes for the opening goal to come as Senior Diego Nicholson found Harewood 18 yards from goal. He chopped to his left foot and fired a shot beyond the goalie. A Montreat defender standing on the line was able to get his head to the ball but the power from the shot pushed him and the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Harewood’s sixth of the season in as many matches which has him ranked 15th in the country for total goals scored.

With four minutes remaining, Montreat picked up a free kick 20 yards from goal in the dead center of the field. The Cavaliers forward did well to bend the ball to the far post into the lower left hand corner equalizing the game at 1-1. It was the third goal given up by the Hornets and what seemed to be destined for their first overtime match would shortly change again. It took Southern Poly 58 seconds to regain the lead and secure their six successive victory. Sophomore Juan Henao picked up a loose ball 25 yards from goal, beat two defenders and dribbled into the box. He shot from about 16 yards and it was blocked by the Montreat defense. The rebound bounced to Maduka who calmly put the ball far post from about 10 yards out. It was Maduka’s sixth goal of the year which has him tied for the team lead and number 15 in the country with Harewood. It was also Maduka’s second game winning goal.

Nationally ranked #5 Southern Poly will host nationally ranked #6 and SSAC opponent Belhaven University Tuesday September 13th at 3pm in their next match. The game will be on the campus of Southern Poly at Nue Soft Technologies field.
