The #7 SPSU Men's Soccer team improves their 2011 record to 3-0 with a 2-0 victory over the visiting Emmanuel College Lions. This was the first conference match for both teams and also the third regular season match for both. The Lions came into today's contest with a 2-0 record.
The Hornets threatened early and often, but only came away with a 1-0 halftime lead. The goal was scored by Senior, Jumol Harewood. It was a penalty kick that he won as he dribbled straight to goal, and was fouled from behind. It was the second penalty kick awarded to the home side in the first half, but the first was missed Senior, Sean Grisham. There was also five corner kicks and six other shots on goal for the Hornets, but nothing saw the back of the net. "I am happy that we played such a well rounded game, but am very concerned about our inability to finish," said SPSU Head Coach Kom Momeni. "We are creating numerous chances in every match, but only come away with one or two goals. We need to do more, if we plan on accomplishing our goals."
The brightest spot for the Hornets was the play of the back line. They, again, held the opposing team to zero goals and less than three shots on goal. Their first two matches saw the opposing teams having only one shot on goal, while this match had the Lions with only two on frame. "We have three new starters back there and they have all done a fine job. I firmly believe that our success comes from how we defend. We ask our backs to do so much, and so far, they have done well."
The final goal was scored by Junior, Emeka Maduka, as he received a flighted pass from Junior Defender, Khris Hammock. Maduka out muscled his defender and dribbled straight to goal and finished in the bottom right hand corner of the Lions' goal. This is his fourth goal of the season, which leads all SPSU players.
Southern Poly hosts their fourth straight home match this Sunday at 5pm. Their opponents will be the Warner University Royals from Lake Wales, FL.
