It was Senior Day and Southern Poly hosted their SSAC rival the Shorter Hawks. They first payed tribute to the six seniors that are on the squad, Rani Alkoptan, Sean Grisham, Jumol Harewood, Marcos Mendez, Diego Nicholson and Chris Szawinski, and each was called to midfield and their career stats were read aloud and a plaque of appreciation given to each. It was a great way to start the day and the team would make sure the game would end as special as it started.
It was a scoreless first half, even though SPSU controlled much of the game. The Hornets had countless scoring opportunities and would continuously pepper the Hawk goal only to fall short and not capitalize on any of the chances. The half would end 0-0 and Southern Poly would have a shot advantage of 13-1 and a 3-0 corner advantage.
The second half would not be the same as the first, as Senior Jumol Harewood would open the scoring with a great individual effort. Senior Chris Szalwinski would play a 60 yard ball beyond the back line of Shorter and Harewood would chase it down and just keep it from running out for a goal kick. In the process he would hold off and turn a Hawk defender and turn towards goal. He would then beat another Hawk defender and blast a left footed shot near post beating the Hawk goalie. The goal was the seniors tenth of the season and would be the eventual game winner, his sixth in the year.
Just six minutes later Seniors Sean Grisham and Deigo Nicholson would get Junior Emeka Maduka in behind the back line for an easy tap in. Grisham would receive a throw in down the line and cut back to the top of the box. There he would find Maduka who beat a man inside, found Nicholson, who would return it to Maduka behind the Hawk defense. Maduka would neatly slot it far post to double the lead and for his ninth goal of the year.
Grisham wasn't done there as he would add the third goal for the Hornets with a great flick off a corner. Sophomore Juan Henao would drive in a hard bending ball to the near post. Grisham would flick it behind his front leg and put it near post. It would beat both the Hawk goalie and defender on the post for his eighth goal of the year. Six minutes later Maduka would get his second of the game and tenth on the year when he received a ball from Grisham behind the back line and after a save from the Hawk goalie Maduka would pick up the rebound and pass it into an empty net.
The final goal of the game came from Freshman Toren Thomas. Thomas pressured a Hawk defender and stole the ball from him. Dribbled along the end line and roofed his shot near post to beat the Hawk keeper fro his first goal of the season.
The final score of 5-0 is the greatest margin of victory for a Southern Poly versus Shorter match. "It was great to see the team bounce back with five goals in the second half. To win on Senior Day was special for everyone and showed the character this team possesses" added Hornet's Head Coach Kom Momeni.
Southern Poly will host #7 William Carey on the final regular game of the season Tuesday Nov 1st at 2pm at Nuesoft Technologies Field.
