The First Annual SPSU Student Leadership Conference

The Elephant in the Room: Seeing and Knowing Leadership

Friday, March 22, 2013, Student Center at Southern Polytechnic State University, Marietta, Georgia

The story of the blind men and the elephant is a common story all over the world. The tale often features six blind men who encounter an elephant and who hope to define its characteristics.   Each man feels a different part of the elephant and describes it. The man who touches the tail feels as though an elephant is like a rope. The man who touches the trunk says the elephant is like a tree branch, and so on.

The metaphor of the blind men and the elephant can be used for how we “see” the abstract term “leadership” as well. We all know what “leadership” means. We often know a “leader” when we see one. However, each field of study, each performing art, each governing entity, each societal entity never seems to “see” the exact same thing when they see a leader or leadership in action.

Proposals for this conference should address how one knows or sees leadership as it concerns any of the following:

  • Popular Culture

  • The Business World
  • The Political World
  • A Field of Study
  • Industry
  • Greek life, SGA, Clubs, Academic Teams, and Associations
