Follow links on this site dealing with Dune Closure and the plant
that is at the center of the issue.
Glamis (really called the Imperial Sand Dunes) is a world famous
off-road area that has been used for recreation since the
seventies. To give you an idea of how popular it is, on holiday
weekends there can be up to 400,000 people out in the dunes on
ATV's, motorcycles, sand rails (dune buggies), and many other
things. You have more than likely seen Glamis without knowing it
since "Return of the Jedi" and "Patriot
Games" were both filmed out there.
Environmental groups have been after Glamis for some time because
of it's size and meaning to a lot of off-roaders. Only now do
they bring up this issue of the rare plant, which has survived
there for many years with off-road use going on around it. If you
look at the map of closed areas (glamisonline, dotted red line),
they don't really seem to correspond well with the colored areas
where the plant grows. I think this is just another unfounded act
aimed at restricting off road vehicles.(Marc Obenshain, Fall

http://www.tree.org/c1.htm
This is a very basic site that discusses alternatives to using
wood pulp to make paper. This site is interesting because the
primary alternative that it suggests is the use of hemp. Although
many believe that hemp can only be used to create illegal drugs,
it is not commonly known of the many other benefits of the hemp
plant. This site talks about the paper that can be made from the
hemp plant is usually of better quality. It also brings up the
point that the hemp plants can be grown quickly and we would no
longer need to destroy the few trees we have left in America. The
site also disputes the drug qualities of the hemp plant, stating,
" Cultivated fiber hemp has practically no THC, the
psychoactive ingredient of varieties cultivated for
marijuana". It is a very interesting site for anyone who
wants to learn about the alternatives to trees for paper
production.
