International Studies Program

Global markets are growth areas for Georgia firms that do business worldwide, especially information technology companies. Atlanta is the global headquarters for diverse corporations, including CNN, Exide Technologies' Global Transportation Group, GE Power Systems, Internet Security Systems, Popeye's International training and operating systems, Worldspan, and Viewlocity. CARE, the worldwide relief organization, and LOMA, the international association of 1,250 insurance and financial service companies from 60 countries, are headquartered in Atlanta. Fortune Magazine's Global Most Admired Companies include three headquartered in Atlanta. Two—Home Depot and United Parcel Service—are also top performers in hiring.

International companies that have chosen Atlanta as their regional headquarters for the Americas include Digiquant (a provider of telecommunications management solutions) and Omnexus (a global e-market place serving the plastics industry. In a 2001 survey of senior 500 executives rating the best cities to locate technology-related businesses, Atlanta ranks second. The most important attribute considered is the availability of a large pool of skilled, experienced, technical talent.

S.P.S.U.’s major in International Studies prepares students well for the global marketplace and society of the future. Indeed, whether people work within or outside the United States, many positions today require excellent communication skills, informed experience with given areas of technology, and cross-cultural competencies. As the world grows ever smaller, these skill sets will become ever more in demand.

Professionals in diverse fields use these abilities to analyze, communicate about, and work comfortably within the infrastructures of global business. By developing a broad knowledge base, Southern Polytechnic graduates serve as critical resources for Georgia’s businesses, as well as a whole host of alternative career centers.

Possible career fields include: international business, the travel industry, transportation, government, non-governmental organizations, public policy, and intelligence. This degree is excellent preparation for law school and other advanced degrees.
