As the Hornets entered Senior Day at
Nuesoft Technologies Field, they knew that a victory against the
visiting Barons from Brewton Parker College would secure them at
least a first round home match in the SSAC Tournament. This
would be the final home, regular season, match for the 2008
season. It ended in a 9-1 lopsided win for the Hornets.
Before the match, Seniors, Dan Brown,
James Grant, and Iago Vazquez were honored at midfield for their
commitment and hard work in establishing the SPSU Men's Soccer
Program. Once the whistle blew, all three were instrumental
in scoring the game's first goal in the second minute of play!
Vazquez received the ball in midfield, beat one defender and
slipped Grant in behind the defense, who served a perfect ball to
the near post, where Brown finished it in the side netting.

Scoring came early and often for the
Hornets and the three seniors were the beneficiaries from a great
day of attacking soccer. Brown finished with two goals
and one assist. While Grant and Vazquez both finished with
two assists a piece. Grant added another goal to bring his
total to five on the season. However, more importantly, his
assist would bring his season total to ten, which now leads the
SSAC.
The game winner came from Freshman,
Back, Chris Szalwinski's assist to fellow Freshman, Diego
Nicholson. Szalwinski finished with two assists on the day
and Nicholson got his first ever game-winning goal of his college
career.
The day would not end without,
Sophomore, Mamadou "Futty" Danso making an impression. He
finished with three goals, bringing his total to 17 for the season
in only 11 matches. He also leads the SSAC in this category.
Other scorers on the day were Scott
Anderson and Sean Grisham
"I am very happy for our seniors, who
have been instrumental in creating the foundation for our program.
All three guys produced and enjoyed their day in the spotlight.
It was great to have them finish off our final, regular season,
home match of 2008,in such an impressive manner" said Coach Momeni.
