The Southern Poly Hornets suffered their first defeat of their inaugural season at the hands of the Covenant College Scots 1-2 in overtime. For the first time all season, the Hornets scored first and we leading going into halftime. The goal was scored by Mamadou "Futty" Danso (4 goals, 1 assist) from near mid-field. He received the ball from James Grant (1 goal, 1 assist), turned and hit a long driven ball that beat the Scots GK from about 55 yards out.
The Scots equalized the game in the 73rd minute from about 30 yards out. David Stair blasted an upper 90 shot that gave all the momentum to Covenant, who won the match just three minutes into overtime. The game winner came on a direct kick just outside the box from Julian Allgeier, whose shot went in between the legs of a Hornet defender in the wall and deflected in the far post.
"Of course, we are never happy when we lose, but putting things into perspective is crucial at this time in our development", said Coach Momeni. "Starting eight Freshmen and being together only for three and a half weeks, you would expect mistakes and inexperience to cost you against a very good team. We learned some great lessons this afternoon."
The Hornets are now 1-1-1 and play this Saturday at TN Wesleyan at 3pm.
