Hornets lose a thriller to SSAC foe, Berry College 1-2.After a slow start, the SPSU Soccer team got punished by an early goal in the first half. Hornet Midfielder, Dustin Harrison, lost the ball in his own defensive third and Berry, Midfielder, Sourosh Amani quickly gathered the ball and played it to Ches Montgomery, who finished it and gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead.
In the 18th minute, it appeared that the Hornets might equalize the match as Forward Mamadou Danso broke away and had a 1 versus 1 with Viking GK, Mike Wentzler. Wentzler made an amazing kick save and quickly got up and saved the rebound shot from Brad Jenkins. Wentzler again made a big play on the ensuing corner kick.
Berry's second goal came on another Montgomery goal, assisted by Luis Salazar. Southern Poly pressed the rest of the match and Wentzler again denied SPSU with excellent saves. Hornet Midfielder, James Grant, had two chances to bring his team closer, but could not finish. Wentzler had six saves in the match.
In the 86 minute, Mamadou Danso (8 goals, 1 assist) again made problems for the Vikings defense and was awarded a penalty kick, which he converted.
"I think we let a golden opportunity slip through our fingers, again. Even though we played well, it just wasn't enough. Having the opportunity of playing the #22 team in the Nation and losing by one goal, is a great accomplishment for a young team, but I thought we played well enough to get the result", said Coach Momeni.
