September 23- Owensboro, KY
Having suffered five major injures (2 torn MCL's, broken foot, broken leg, and injured foot) within the last ten days- all to starters- the SPSU Men's soccer team relied mostly on players with limited experience as it traveled to Owensboro, KY for a weekend trip to play Kentucky Wesleyan College and Brescia University.
The first contest of the weekend saw the Hornets fall to KYWC 1-0 early in the first half. An unmarked man finished an easy opportunity after a long throw in the box. The second goal for KYWC came mid way through the second half as, again, an unmarked man put a way a simple volley in the back of the net.
The visiting Hornets regained their composure and scored on a James Grant goal from Alex Valdez. Having out-shot the home team and having dominated the second half, the Hornets only managed one goal the entire match. "Our attacking players did well today, but just could not find the back of the net. We need to be more efficient in our attacking third", said Coach Momeni.
The second match of the weekend ended 0-0 in regulation. However, the Brescia University Bearcats scored in the second overtime period to give the Hornets their second lose in two nights, by a score of 0-1.
"You always hate to use injuries as an excuse, but playing without five regular starters sure played a major factor tonight. This horrible injury situation will be a great challenge for our program, if we can overcome it. It will show the character of our team", said Coach Momeni.
