The Hornet’s season came to an abrupt end in what can only be said as the “craziest” match. The Hornets went into the match without conceding a goal in their last three games and looked like they would do so Friday leading into the match versus the Emmanuel College Lions. However their dreams would be shattered by the Lions after a clearance from all of fifty yards out went over the freshman GK Eric Ati. “It’s one of the craziest things I have ever seen in my whole coaching career. It looked like the player was just trying to get the ball back into the penalty box and to have it happen on such a crucial game for us is extremely disappointing”, said Coach Kom Momeni.
The Hornets would have their chances though, 26 in all. They would be denied by the woodwork four times, clearances off of the line, and it seemed to be one of the days where the “Soccer Gods” were out to stop them. Mamadou “Futty” Danso hit the crossbar twice with headers in the box, James Grant came within inches, and Moussa Sinayoko also missed with two glorious chances.
The Hornets dominated the whole game and recorded seventeen shots on goal against the Lions one. The Lions’ keeper pulled off some great saves, but poor finishing by the Hornets was the difference maker.
“We only have ourselves to blame by not beating Emmanuel. We proved that our young team has a lot of potential and next year these crucial mistakes will hopefully not plague a more experienced team.” A determined Head Coach Momeni added after his toughest loss as a new Head Coach.
The Hornets finished up for the season
8-8-2, a massive achievement for a first year program.
