The Hornets took their record in the last 7 games to 5 -1-1 and their overall record to 8-7-2 after beating conference oponents Brewton Parker College in a comfortable away 2-0 victory. The Hornets defense recorded another solid performance with yet another clean sheet at the back. Goal Keeper Eric Ati acheived his third clean sheet in a row and his fifth of the season.
The first half was goal less with the Hornets getting a goal called back after Forward, Moussa Sinayoko was deemed as being offside. Also, Midfielder, Dustin Harrison came within inches of breaking the dead lock from an unselfish pass from Mamadou "Futty" Danso in behind the Barons defen se but his shot trickled past the post.
The Hornets pressed in the first half and were awarded six corners, but could not find the back of the net. In the 47th minute, a great run by Carlos Estrada resulted in him being brought down in the the Barons half, and from the resulting free-kick, central midfielder Dan Brown would find the back of the net. A great ball from Morgan Yarbrough found Dan Brown at the front post who recorded his second goal of the season and his first collegiate game winner. A special moment for Brown after a hard week due to the passing of his grandfather. "Dan's performance along with central midfielder Jeff Paffenback was the difference maker in this game. They controlled the middle of the park with their aggressive play and it proved to be vital in our victory" Kom Momeni added after the game.
Just six minutes later, a mistake in the Barons defense left Dustin Harrison latching onto a ball from Futty Danso and slotted it home, taking his goal total to six for the season and putting the Hornets into a comfortable 2-0 lead. The Hornets would come close to getting a third goal when Carlos Estrada found himself free in the box and on the end of a James Grant services from the left side. However, he could not finish. SPSU top scorer, Futty Danso (16 goals-five game winners) would be kept at bay for only the third time this season with some big saves from the Barons keeper.
"All in all, we never expected, prior to the season starting , that these players who had been with each other for only two weeks, could make the Conference Tournament and go in with a winning record. The last two months do not count for anything though, if we don't record another home victory this Friday to put us into the tournament. I can't wait to see how this season shakes up", a delighted Momeni said after the 2-0 away win over Brewton Parker.
Please come support the Hornets this Friday on Neusoft field at 3 pm where the Horntes go into the game, knowing that a win will take them into the first round of the Conference tournament.
