The SPSU Hornets Men's Soccer Team tied the visiting Warriors from Southern Wesleyan University 1-1. For the second time in a row, the Hornets went into double overtime. This time, their defense held strong and they created two great chances to win in the extra periods.
The lone goal for the Hornets was scored by Dustin Harrison at the 48th minute. He was assisted by Futty Danso. Defender, Jeff Paffenback sent a long ball into space allowing Danso to beat his defenders to the ball and pass it to a wide open Harrison on the back post. "It was a classic counter-attack goal involving three players and four touches on the ball", said Coach Momeni.
The Warriors answered quickly by scoring a goal three minutes later. Luis Ramirez hit a shot from about 20 yards out that beat Hornet, GK, Eric Ati over the top, hitting the cross bar and bouncing in the back of the net.
The Hornets had another great counter-attack opportunity involving Danso and Harrison, however, this time Harrision's shot was smothered by SWU GK, Mitch McKay.
Both teams had great opportunities within the last 10 minutes of regulation and in overtime- SWU hit the post and SPSU had two shots within 12 yards.
"Considering all of our injuries and the competition, we consider this a good result", commented Momeni. "We put ourselves in some nice opportunities to win the match and that is encouraging."
