Soccer - Men
Saturday August 29th Athens, TN The 2009 Men's Soccer season started with a road trip to TN Wesleyan College, and a 5-1 victory for the visiting Hornets. It was the third time in as many years that they have won their opening match. This time, it was a complete effort from the entire team, as evidenced by having five different goal scorers. "We were extremely happy about how we went forward in the second half. Everyone got involved and a handful of players had very good performances", said Head Coach Kom Momeni. The Hornets got on the scoreboard in the 26th minute when Senior, Midfielder, Felipe Lopez flicked on a goal kick, onto a sprinting Emeka Maduka. Maduka outran the Bulldog's Center Backs and beat the GK to put the Hornets up to 1-0. Early in the second half, SPSU Defender, Stephen Herget was called for a foul 20 yards from his own goal. The ensuing free kick resulted in a spectacular goal from TN Wesleyan, Midfielder, John Carrier, who blasted the ball in the far left corner of the goal to make it 1-1. The Carrier goal must have energized the Hornets as they scored four goals in the next 22 minutes. The game winner came off of the foot of Senior, Midfielder, Scott Anderson who had a blistering shot of his own from about 25 yards out at the 63 minute mark, just three minutes after the game was equalized. Seven minutes later, Freshman, Midfielder, Jack Skinner played a ball into Maduka, who was taken down in the penalty area. Lopez scored his first goal of the season on the PK making it 3-1. Lopez, however, was not finished, as he got his third assist on the day seven minutes after his penalty kick. He received a ball on the left hand side and quickly found Junior, Forward, Juliano Oliveira, who calmly headed the ball into the back of the net. The Hornets wrapped up the scoring when Anderson broke up a play in the midfield and knocked the ball into the box. Sophomore, Forward, Kouami d'Almeida picked up the ball and beat the GK to the 50/50 ball. He slotted the shot in between two defenders to make it 5-1. "The back line of Chris Szalwinski, Stephen Herget, Marcos Mendez, an Abdi Hassan did a good job all day, and GK, Eric Ati was very solid", said Momeni. The Hornets next match is against 2008 SSAC Tournament Champions, Lee University. Kick off is set for 7pm in Cleveland, TN. Senior, Midfielder, Felipe Lopez ended the day with 3 Assists and 1 Goal photos available at www.reactionimages.com
