This time last year, SPSU lost at
home to conference rivals Shorter College, however, this year they
were determined to be on the winning side and it would prove to be a
difficult one.
The Hornets went into today’s game
unbeaten with a record of 4-0-1, while the Hawks from Shorter
College were 4-3.
The Hornets got off to a decent
start opening the Hawk’s defense but both freshmen Emeka Maduka and
Sophomore, Kouami d’Almeida could not find the back of the net
within the first 15 minutes. Shorter looked to threaten through the
air, but could not create any clear cut chances.
The deadlock would be broken when
Sophomore, Matt Wood, claiming his first assist of the year, and
Maduka would combine to give the Hornets a crucial early goal. Wood
composed himself at the back and played a great ball in behind the
defense and Maduka still had a lot to do. He out ran the Hawk’s
defense and stroked the ball home from 20 yards. It was his third
goal of the season and second conference game winner.
The game would see Shorter enjoy
lots of possession but the Hornets would look to counter.
Opportunities from Conference point leader, Felipe Lopez, would go
astray and Freshmen, Jack Skinner, also had a chance of notching his
first goal of the campaign.
The game would end a little sloppy
from Southern Poly, but “A win’s a win” said a delighted Head Coach
Kom Momeni. “We worked relatively hard, but a little frantic at
times. I will take an ugly win any day”.
“We had several good looks on goal
and just need to finish. We put so pressure on our backs when we
are only leading by one goal. If we had tucked away any one of our
other 4 or 5 very good chances, things would have been much easier,”
added Momeni.
The Hornet’s face fellow
Conference opponent’s Emmanuel College this Saturday at 4PM and they
look to extend their unbeaten run to 7 games.
Freshman, Forward, Emeka Maduka scored his second
Conference game winner and his third goal of the year
