Soccer - Men
Friday September 4th Cleveland, TN For the second year in a row, the Men's Soccer Team defeated Lee University in a regular season match, while keeping a clean sheet. This time it was 1-0 at the Lee University Classic. Both teams came into tonight's match undefeated and having played no SSAC. It was a total team effort that allowed the Hornets to come away on top. The lone score came off of the foot of Freshman, Forward, Emeka Maduka in the 26th minute. Substitute Chris Szalwinski won the ball in midfield and gave a perfect through ball into space. Maduka, who has scored two goals in two games, out ran the Flames back line and scored the game winner. The Hornets had two other great opportunities in the first half. One came off of the head of Henning Blenkle, who was all by himself with the GK. He headed a Felipe Lopez cross, cleanly, but right into the hands of the opposing GK. The second great chance for the Hornets came from Maduka who again out ran the Flames back line and faced a 1 v 1 with the GK. This time his shot was wide of the goal. The second half saw more of the same, as the Hornets sat back and counter-attacked the Flames. This time down the flanks. Sophomores, Chris Szalwinski and Sean Grisham both had 1 v 1 opportunities with the Lee University keeper, who turned away both shoots. Grisham's second 1 v 1 opportunity was turned away by a fantastic save. "We were very dangerous all night. We had 6 shots on goal, five of which were 1 v 1 opportunities. We counter attacked with pace and through the midfield much better in the second half. I wish we could have finished a bit better," said Head Coach Kom Momeni. SPSU (2-0) goes back to Lee University to play William Carey, who is currently ranked #25 in the National Polls, on Saturday September 5th.\ Freshman, Forward, Emeka Maduka scored the game winner and his second goal of the year photos available at www.reactionimages.com
