Southern Poly came into today’s
game recording three clean sheets in their last three games and four
for the season. They would be determined to continue their winning
ways for the season, and looked to record their eight victory,
whilst continuing their unbeaten run. Today’s opponents would be
Faulkner University who would come into the game with a record of
4-5 and yet to record a SSAC win.
Southern Poly had several chances
the first half. Their best effort came from Freshman Emeka Maduka,
who should have taken his tally to 7 for the season. A through ball
from Kouami D’Almeida led to a one-on-one, which was saved by the
Faulkner keeper, one of the recorded 10 saves for the day. Another
chance from substitute Jack Skinner nearly had a dramatic entrance
into the game, but his volley just went over the bar. Southern Poly
would continue to pile on the pressure throughout the first half,
but could not find the deserved opening goal.
The second half would see Southern
Poly again create lots more chances, but great saves from Austin
White kept the Eagles in the game. On the 65th minute
mark, Emeka Maduka should have found the back of net, but the young
freshman was denied by a great save by White. He brushed by two
defenders, only to see his curling far post shot, touched by the
post. It would take the Hornets up to the 83rd minute
before breaking the deadlock. A through ball from Senior Felipe
Lopez, found Sophomore Diego Nicholson who whipped in a great ball
to the back post. Sophomore Kouami D’Almeida found the back of the
net with a diving header, his third of the season.
The final score would end up 1-0,
with Southern Poly recording their fifth clean sheet on the season
(4 in a row), and take their overall record to 8-0-1 and 3-0 in the
Conference.
“It was a good performance by us
today. We got 11 shots on goal and had 11 corner kicks. I am
disappointed in our inability to finish," said Head Coach Kom
Momeni. “We were defensively sound, once again, and the back five
of Eric Ati, Sean Grisham, Marcos Mendez, Stephen Herget and Matt
Wood all have been solid. This has been a big reason for our
success this season."
