The Hornets came out to win their
first ever Regular Season Conference Championship. With a 2-0
victory at Brewton Parker College, they did just that; and in their
third year of existence. They came into today’s game with a
record of 10-0-1, SSAC 5-0 and off the back of a great win against
AUM. Southern Poly had only conceded one goal in the Conference and
they wanted to improve on their record.
Seven minutes into the game, the
young Nigerian Freshmen, Emeka Maduka, scored the game winner. A
great ball in behind the Barons defense, and a superb individual
goal by Maduka put the Hornet’s 1-0 up. Sophomore, Midfielder,
Diego Nicholson played a great ball in behind the defense, but
Maduka still had a lot to do. He outran two defenders and
delicately beat the goalkeeper, passing the ball into the back of
the net. This was Maduka’s 10th goal of the season and
his fourth game winner (all of which coming in the SSAC). Southern
Poly would create several chances in the first half, but they could
not find the crucial second goal they needed.
The second half saw a rejuvenated
Southern Poly side and within 10 minutes of the restart, Sophomore
Kouami D’Almeida extended their lead. He picked up a scrappy ball
in the Baron’s 18 yard box, but still had a lot to do. He beat two
defenders and coolly slotted the ball past the Brewton Parker
keeper.
Southern Poly would win the game
2-0 and extend their unbeaten record to 11-0-1 and 6-0 in the
Conference. “Winning today put us as the first seed in the
conference tournament...that is it. Our goal at the beginning year
was to go to the National Tournament”, said Head Coach Kom Momeni
after their Conference Title win.
