For the second consecutive week
the Hornets (7-0-1) were ranked #10 in the NAIA and facing a very
strong opponent in Berry College (3-2-3). Added to the already
difficult task of facing a once SSAC opponent on the road was the
enhanced environment of Berry’s Homecoming on the day.
Senior, Midfielder Scott Anderson
scored the lone goal of the game at the 23:30 mark of the first half
when Sophomore, Kouami d'Almeida cut
inside and played a ball across the top of the box to Anderson who
struck a low hard shot from 25 yards. This would make it the fourth
goal for Anderson this season with three being game winners. The
first half continued with several chances by both teams but only
Anderson’s hit the back of the onion bag.
The
second half was much of the same as the Hornet’s defense limited the
Vikings chances with Junior Goalkeeper Eric Ati, making just 3 saves
the entire second half. SPSU had two great chances with about 15
minuets left. Junior Stephen Herget picked up a deflection about
three yards from goal and miss hit it for an easy save for the Berry
GK. With nine minutes left, Senior Felipe Lopez picked up a ball
from Freshman Jack Skinner at midfield and beat a defender to go 1v1
with the Berry GK. Once again a crucial save kept the Vikings in
the match.
When
the final whistle blew, it was 1-0 Hornets and again they posted a
road shutout. They continue their undefeated streak to eight games
and post their third consecutive shutout; outscoring their opponents
9-0 in the last three games.
Southern Poly’s next game is Saturday October 10th
against SSAC Conference foe Faulkner University at Nuesoft
Technology field at 4pm.
