Former WNBA player, Rutgers Standout set to join Lady Hornets Staff

Marietta, GA- Southern Polytechnic State University head coach Nathan Teymer announced today that Usha Gilmore has joined the Lady Hornet Basketball staff as an assistant coach. Gilmore comes to Southern Poly from Davidson College where she spent the past 3 seasons as an assistant coach.

“I’m ecstatic to have Usha as part of our SPSU family,” Teymer said. “She brings to the table a wealth of experience and a passion for the game of basketball that will be very contagious. Her personality and determination will attract some outstanding student-athletes to become a part of our Southern Poly Basketball Family.”

Prior to her time at Davidson, Usha had assistant coaching stints at Longwood University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Wagner College.

In 2000, Usha was a third-round pick for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA. During her season with the Fever, Usha represented the organization at over 25 speaking engagements within the community to promote health and education.

Collegiately, Usha played at Rutgers University under legendary head coach C. Vivian Stringer. A four year starter for the Scarlet Knights, Gilmore helped the program to an overall record of 88-41, 3 NCAA tournament appearances including a Final Four appearance in 2000.  She was also a Big East Conference All-Rookie team selection in 1997.

A native of Moncks Corner, SC. Gilmore received her Bachelor of Science degree in sociology with a minor in African-American studies from Rutgers. She was the 1996 Miss South Carolina Basketball and the 1996 South Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year.
