Archives and Special Collections

While the Southern Polytechnic community has done an excellent job in the past of collecting items relevant to our history, many of these items need special attention if they are to be accessed without accidental damage. Over half of the items in special collections are currently under-documented or need special housing needs addressed in order to be useable as a research collection.

The four projects currently on the archives calendar for arrangement and description are:

1) Gregson and Ellis Architectural Drawings (Nov. 2005 - Aug. 2006)

2) Alan and Louise Sellars Antique Tool Collection (Nov. 2005 - Aug. 2006)

3) Southern Polytechnic Photographs (starting Sept. 2006 as an ongoing project)

4) The Lawrence V. Johnson Library Rare Books (Jan. to March of 2007)

Current Projects

Thousands of drawings of public use buildings built in Georgia from 1945-1975 are  currently being arranged and described.  The first 2000 drawings, representing over 150 different structures, will be added to the catalog for the fall 2006 semester.

The Gregson and Ellis Architectural Drawings

Eleven years ago the 20 panels of antique tools donated to the University were removed from the walls for conservation treatment.  This fall, two of the panels will be return to the second floor walls.

In September of 2006, the archive will begin to sort through and arrange our University’s collection of photographs.  This will be an ongoing project, with some digital access planned. Volunteer workers are welcome!
