Criteria for Determining Faculty Salaries

Contents This P&P includes the following main sections:
  • Background
  • Determining entry-level salary
  • Determining salary increases

Background
  • Regents' policies require that each institution publish both the criteria and the evaluation methods used to determine entry-level salaries for full-time teaching faculty members employed at the ranks of instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, and professor.
  • Regents' policies further require each institution to publish the criteria and evaluation methods used to determine the extent of salary increases awarded to currently employed full-time faculty members.

Determining Entry-
Level Salary
  1. Each entry-level salary shall be determined on the basis of the specific requirements of the position and the qualifications of the individual employed to fill the position.
  2. Main position criteria include academic rank, academic discipline, and the nature of the responsibilities to be assumed.
  3. Sample criteria related to qualifications of the individual could include the following:
    • Academic degrees earned
    • Teaching and other relevant experience
    • Scholarship record, honors, and potential
    • Relevant professional achievements or recognition

Determining Salary
Increases
Assuming there is no Regents policy to the contrary, increases are based on merit. The criteria for determining the extent of such increases include the following four main categories of activity (also see the Faculty Activities P&P):
  • Teaching ability
  • Service
  • Academic achievement (also called Scholarship)
  • Professional growth and development
