Employee Service Awards

Background Southern Polytechnic State University acknowledges the service and achievement of its permanent employees at periodic intervals with appropriate ceremony and awards.  The purpose of this P&P is to provide details about the procedure.

Awards
Committee
  1. The awards and the ceremony date are determined by a committee composed of representatives from the Staff Council and the chair of the Outstanding Faculty Awards Committee.
  2. The director of human resources will work closely with this group in providing service award and retiree information.
  3. The Staff Council may designate a coordinator of the event. The coordinator should be a permanent, full-time employee of SPSU, but is not required to be a current member of the council. The committee and/or the coordinator will request assistance from other members of the SPSU community as needed.

Committee Responsibilities
1.
Obtain from the director of human resources a list of those employees who, by December 31 of the current calendar year, are eligible to receive service awards for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years of service.

Note:
For the purposes of service awards, the years of service of an employee is defined as continuous service at Southern Polytechnic State University as a permanent employee. Purchased service for retirement purposes shall not count as continuous service. This definition shall not preclude an award being given to any employee who is deemed by the committee to merit such an honor.

2.
Determine from the director of human resources those employees officially eligible to receive retiree recognition, according to guidelines of the University System of Georgia.
3.
  1. Coordinate with the executive director for advancement the request for funds necessary for awards and a reception.
  2. Select and obtaining certificates, lapel pins, plaques, and other awards for presentation to the recipients at the annual event scheduled for that purpose.
  3. Acknowledge the generosity of the university’s Foundation (with the assistance of the Advancement Office) in the written program and through participation on the program by the appropriate Foundation trustee(s).
4.
  1. Determine the date for the ceremony that shall take place toward the end of the spring semester.
  2. Plan and execute the ceremony.
  3. Plan and hold a reception after the ceremony.
