SPSU Policy For all regular employees of the Southern Polytechnic State University, sick leave shall be accumulated at the rate of one working day per calendar month of service. All regular part-time employees working one-half time or more will accumulate sick leave in an equivalent ratio to their percentage of time employed. Sick leave for all employees shall be cumulative.

Note:
Refer to P&P 828.0 on procedures for payment of sick leave and the relationship to holidays, vacation, and administrative leave.

Granting Sick
Leave
Sick leave may be granted at the discretion of the institution and upon approval by the supervisor for any of the following reasons:
  1. Illness or injury of the employee
  2. Medical and dental treatment or consultation, including temporary disability due to pregnancy
  3. Quarantine due to a contagious illness in the employee's household
  4. Illness, injury, or death in the employee's immediate family requiring the employee's presence
Immediate family shall be defined as parents (including grandparents, parents-in-law), spouse, children (including stepchildren), brothers, and sisters. Employees may be granted five (5) days for bereavement leave for the death of the employee’s immediate family member. A physician’s statement will be required after the initial 5 days granted to enable the continuous use of sick leave

Physician’s
Statement
If sick leave is claimed for a continuous period in excess of one week, (more than forty continuous hours), a physician's statement is required to permit further claim of sick leave rights by the employee-patient. This statement is to be given to the appropriate supervisor, approved by the supervisor and forwarded to the Human Resources Office. The appropriate supervisor is responsible for securing the physician's statement.

FMLA Leave Any employee unable to return to work because of illness and who has exhausted all accrued sick leave will utilize any accrued vacation leave and/or may request FMLA leave.

Terminating
Employee
A terminating employee shall not accumulate sick leave or be entitled to receive sick pay after the last working day of his or her employment.
