Emeritus Status

Contents This P&P includes the following main sections:
  • Background
  • Emeritus nomination process
  • Emeritus privileges

Background Emeritus status honors distinguished service by retired members of the university community.  At the president’s discretion, Southern Polytechnic State University may confer the title of  “emeritus” on any of the following individuals who qualify for retirement under guidelines of the University System of Georgia:
  • Tenured professor, tenured associate professor, or tenured assistant professor
  • Board-approved, non-tenure track professor, associate professor, or assistant professor (with ten or more years of honorable and distinguished service at SPSU)
  • Board-approved administrative officer (with ten or more years of honorable and distinguished service at SPSU)
Note:
Service is considered “distinguished” if the nominee has contributed substantially to SPSU beyond minimum expectations.

Emeritus
Nomination
Process
This section outlines the nomination process for faculty emeritus status. Nominations of administrative officers will be handled separately by the president.

Step Process Description
1.
Faculty members in the nominee’s program submit a memo to the school dean, providing strong support for the nomination.  The memo should contain signature and date lines for approval by the dean, vice president for academic affairs, and president.

Note:
Normally, this memo will be submitted at the beginning of the nominee’s last term before retirement, assuming he or she has officially informed the dean and vice president for academic affairs in writing of his or her intention to retire.  Thus an individual, while still on campus, can be recognized if he or she is selected for emeritus status.

2.
The dean signs the program memorandum and forwards it to the vice president for academic affairs.
3.
The vice president for academic affairs signs the memorandum and forwards it to the president.
4.
The president signs the memorandum, signifying approval of the recommendation, and returns it to the vice president for academic affairs.
5.
The vice president for academic affairs sends a letter of notification to the faculty member, with copies to the program head and dean.

Emeritus
Privileges
This section describes privileges accorded emeriti faculty. The president will establish privileges of emeriti administrative officers individually.
  1. Faculty emeriti are viewed as members of the faculty, are included in formal invitations issued to the faculty, and are considered for ceremonial duties as may be appropriate.
  2. Faculty emeriti receive some of the rights and privileges of working faculty, including the following:
    • Full library privileges, as resources permit
    • Electronic-mail access
    • Space on the program web site for an academic web page
    • Photocopying privileges, as appropriate

    • Note:
These privileges are subject to availability of resources, as determined by the vice president for academic affairs.
  3. An emeritus faculty member may receive use of an office, telephone, and other facilities subject to (a) availability of resources, (b) approval by the vice president for academic affairs, and (c) agreement that the resources will be used in a way that furthers the goals of SPSU and the academic community.
  4. An emeritus faculty member may attend and participate in faculty meetings, but he or she cannot vote.
